The Senate Committee Education has appealed to the Lagos State Government to Pay its 2012 Counterpart Funding for the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme.

Sen. Uche Chukwumerije, the Chairman of the Committee, made the appeal on Monday when the committee met with Gov. Babatunde Fashola at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

He said the prompt remittance of UBE Counterpart Funding by Lagos and other states was imperative to enable the programme to achieve its objectives.

Chukwumerije said Lagos had always promptly fulfilled its obligations to the UBE programme, describing the development as unusual.

He commended the state government for its interventionist strides in the Education sector, saying those strides had become a reference point in the management of Education in the country.

The committee was in Lagos as part of its tour of educational institutions in the South-West.

Senators Joshua Dariye and Oluremi Tinubu were some of the committee members on the visit.

“In terms of all the educational development indices such as state of school infrastructure, performance of pupils in examinations, teachers` competence, among others, the state ranks best.

“The state government has really achieved much in the area of educational development and this can be seen by everybody. This is not flattery, if it were not so, we will still say it,“ he said.

Responding, Fashola advocated increased assistance for the UBE Board (UBEB), especially in the supervision of contractors handling school projects.

He said the state deviated from UBE model classrooms and adopted its own model because of cases of collapsed buildings.

The governor said that part of the policy to improve quality of Education in the state was the pegging of average scores in primary schools to 50 per cent, including English and mathematics.

He also said the involvement of parents in the career of their wards via regular attendance at PTA meetings had also been considered an important factor for pupils` promotion.

Fashola said the state government had embarked on massive upgrade of school infrastructure, to give a fillip to the standard of education.

Earlier, the Chairman of State UBEB, Mrs GSenate Appeals To Lagos To Pay Up Universal Basic Education Counterpart Fundingahan Dawodu, said Lagos paid N1.92 billion as its Counterpart Funding for 2011.

She promised that the state would fulfil its obligation for 2012, as it had only just received a letter on its indebtedness to the commission.
