Benue State Govern-ment has directed that the more than 4,000 workers who were employed earlier this year across the 23 local gov-ernments of the state be relieved of their appoint-ment. The chairman of the Local Government Ser-vice Commission, Richard Gbande, disclosed that the sack was imperative based on the request of the local government caretaker au-thorities, who sought for replacement of some staff in their councils.

Gbande said it was dis-covered that the figures of the new employees were over-bloated thereby add-ing additional strain on the lean purse of the local councils in respect of the wages. Saturday Mirror find-ings revealed that, already, some staff had already been laid off two months ago. Those included in the latest sack are those who have reached the retire-ment age and those who are affected by the direc-tives.

One of those affected by the sack, Denis Iornon-gu, 60, a cleaner with Bu-ruku local government, said that he was given a letter of sack but had not been paid and that had made things very difficult for him and his family.

Others, who pleaded anonymity, expressed their frustration over the directive, saying they had never been queried and could not understand why all of a sudden they would be relieved of their appointments under the pretext of an over-bloated work force.

Saturday Mirror also had it on reliable author-ity that some civil ser-vants were affected by the on-going screening exer-cise where ghost workers were said to have been un-covered. As a result, those considered as ghost work-ers had their names taken off the pay roll. Efforts to get the views of the Head of Ser-vice of the state, Mike Iordey, to clear the air on the alleged existence of ghost workers in the state, failed as he was said to be busy in a meeting up to the time of going to press. How-ever, a senior officer in the office of the Head of Service (names with-held) acknowledged the complaint of missing names on the pay roll.
