The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja released the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) For Postgraduate programmes in Nigerian Universities.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, while presenting the guidelines said the document was to ensure minimum academic requirement and quality assurance For the operation of Postgraduate Studies in the country.

“I want to remind the universities that the curricula, pedagogical methods and standards contained in the document are minimum requirements.

“Therefore, universities are at liberty to maintain them and are even enjoined to go beyond the standards.

“It should be noted, however, that anything below the standards will not be acceptable.

“The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission (NUC) will use the document as guide For assuring quality in Postgraduate education in Nigeria. ’’

Rufa’I said, however, that it was imperative to have a Benchmark document to guide the planning of curriculum and teaching of courses in the universities.

She said it was disheartening that most universities established academic programmes without recourse to the document.

She said that all academic programmes taught in Nigeria universities were expected to comply with the requirements in training university graduates.

“Federal Government is aware of the situation of Postgraduate training and the need to increase access to qualitative Postgraduate education in the country.

“That will ultimately address the shortfall in the required number of lecturers in the universities.

“I, therefore, want to assure you that the Federal Government of Nigeria under the present administration, is determined to reposition Nigerian universities towards becoming more research-oriented and globally competitive. ’’

Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the NUC, called on universities to ensure that the document was used in implementing standards in their various schools.

He said that the BMAS For Postgraduate Studies had been fully reviewed to ensure that Postgraduate Studies were at par with international standards.

Prof. Michael Faborode, the Secretary-General of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU), said that Postgraduate Studies were key to education.

He said that some of the new universities were rushing to establish Postgraduate studies, a development he said, was causing problems in terms of standards and integrity of the schools.

“My submission is that For Nigerian universities to join the league of international universities, Postgraduate education is the way to go.

“Because when you looked at indices For attaining world-class status you will find out that they have excellence in research, quality teaching, high level freedom, highly talented students and well equipped facilities among others.”

Prof. Atiku-Garab Yahaya, Chairman, Committee of Deans of Postgraduate Schools, said the formal presentation of the document would ensure good quality in Postgraduate Studies in Nigerian universities.

Yahaya said that in ensuring BMAS For Postgraduate programmes in universities the issue of funds and research should be given priority.
