The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Thursday joined the campaign train of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) against exam malpractice by asking the ICPC to Introduce its Units in campuses nationwide.

NANS Director of Programmes, Akosile Mukhtar, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

NAN reports that NOA is embarking on a nationwide campaign to raise the standard of the conduct of examinations in Nigeria’s education system

Mukhtar said that NANS had gone to the ICPC boss to inform him of the association’s decision to have a unit of ICPC on each campus.

He said this would help to forestall the spate of examination malpractice in the tertiary institutions.

“We have gone to ICPC to tell them that we want an ICPC unit in each of the tertiary institutions or campuses in the country”, he said, adding that these Units would be used in apprehending lecturers that could be demanding money in return for marks from the students.

Mukhtar added that the demand by lecturers was partly responsible for the various examination malpractice being witnessed in the nation’s institutions.

“If a lecturer decides to fail 80 per cent of his students, in the hope that this will intimidate them to succumb to his demands, such a case can be tackled quickly by the ICPC unit of the institution.

“I know that everybody wants to graduate from school as at when due, but it should not be at any expense’’.

He appealed to the Nigerian Students to stay away from such temptations, adding that the method of intimidating Students to pay for marks or cheat in examinations was a shame and must be condemned.

He noted that examination malpractice was not a one-way traffic as some parents often indulge their children and wards in such sharp practices.

Mukhtar called on parents to desist from such acts, describing them as capable of ruining the student’s career.

He said that the Association would ensure that Students live and act responsibly in the society, adding that NANS had embarked on a summit of financial investment and entrepreneurship to help students.

Mukhtar disclosed that NANS would soon organise a two-day sensitisation programme for Students on examination malpractice, to stress the importance of the issue to the students.

He partially blamed NANS for keeping quiet on the menace for so long, adding: “We have told the entire NANS chapter to collaborate with the management of their individual institutions to ensure that there is zero tolerance for examination malpractice”.

He said that NANS would assist NOA in ensuring that its ongoing orientation on exam ethics was felt by all Nigerians.
