The Nigeria Governors Forum Wednesday night in Abuja resolved to challenge The deduction from source The fuel subsidy claims from The sales proceeds of Nigeria’s crude oil by The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation at The Supreme Court.

The Governors will also challenge subsidy deductions by NNPC that have not been appropriated by The National Assembly in The annual budget. One of governor at The meeting, attended by more than 33 governors. The resolution to seek The supreme court interpretation on The deductions was borne out of The need to bring and make NNPC accountable and ensure that all revenue is accounted for in line with The constitution that stipulates that all funds of The federation must be centrally collected before disbursement.

The governor said that it amounted to an aberration where The National Assembly approves N888 billion as fuel subsidy for The year and NNPC ends up deducting more than The amount approved in The budget. For instance, The governor said that The approved monthly subsidy deduction stood at N75 billion, but NNPC deducts more than N150 billion monthly.

The governor said seven months into The year, The sum allocated for payment of subsidies has depleted and that NNPC would have to be made to operate a zero account and should not be allowed to retain any refund. This, The governor said, was one of The reasons why The Governors agreed to get a legal interpretation from The Supreme Court to expose The unconstitutional actions of NNPC.

Other issues discussed at The meeting included The security challenges in The country. The deductions by NNPC will also form part of today’s Council of States meeting at The State House, Abuja.
States represented by their Governors included Katsina, Kaduna, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Taraba, Jigawa, Kogi, Enugu, Delta, Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo and Ebonyi.

Others were Abia, Plateau, Rivers, Bayelsa, Anambra, Gombe and Adamawa, while Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Ogun and Yobe States were represented by their deputy governors.
