Some 72 hours before the governorship election in Edo State, armed soldiers have poured into the State on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan. “Contingents of soldiers are entering Edo as if the State is now a war front,” said one of our sources. The deployment of Troops is seen as part of a plot by the Jonathan administration and a PDP chieftain, Tony Anenih, to rig the election in favor of Major General Charles Airhiavbere (ret.), the candidate of the PDP.

Mr. Airhiavbere is running against incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). In yet another curious development, the Nigerian Police also recalled Olayinka Balogun, the Edo State Police Commissioner, to the Police headquarters. Police spokesman Frank Mba confirmed the move to SaharaReporters. In place of the recalled Balogun, two high-ranking Police officers, including Marvel Akpovibo, a Deputy Inspector General of Police, have been deployed to Edo State to oversee the election. In addition, all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in Edo State have swapped commands.

The appearance of Troops all over the State has amplified public anxiety that the Presidency, Mr. Anenih and the PDP are set to snatch the governorship by all means. “Governor Oshiomhole has exposed Chief Anenih as not only a political fraud but also a lightweight when it comes to mobilizing voters,” said a political analyst monitoring the election. “In turn, Chief Anenih has vowed to unseat the governor and install retired Major General Airhiavbere. It appears that President Jonathan has decided to use Federal might, including the army, to help Chief Anenih and the PDP to carry the state.”

Meanwhile, Brigadier General Abel Obi Umahi, who commands the 4th Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Benin City, has described the heavy presence of soldiers as an attempt to demonstrate the readiness of the military to help President Jonathan achieve a credible and free election governorship election in the state.

But critics have dismissed Umahi’s statement as a ruse. An Edo-born lawyer who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), asked, “Why should soldiers seize major streets in this State in an exercise they call ‘Operation Show of Force’? Who are the soldiers showing this force to, and for what purpose? As far as I am concerned, this is a highly questionable use of the armed forces. It is an attempt to carry out a coup for the PDP in the name of ensuring free and fair election. But President Jonathan can be rest assured that we will go to any length to expose his deceit.”

Another source who works for the State Security Service (SSS) told SaharaReporters that the Police and soldiers who will be deployed on electoral duties “know automatically that their job is to help the PDP to win.”
Two weeks ago, Mr. Jonathan led a contingent of PDP members to campaign in Benin City, the Edo State capital. During his campaign speech, the president said he had secured assurances from both the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defense Staff of their readiness for the governorship election in Edo State.
