Niger State Govern-ment has disclosed plans to source N1.5bn from the Federal Mortgage Bank to con-struct 400 housing units for civil servants under the state Housing Scheme pro-gramme.

The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Dr. Peter Sale Sarki, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Minna. He said the government took the decision to source the loan to meet the short-age of houses, particularly for the workers, in the state.

The commissioner said when completed, the houses would be sold at affordable rates to both the medium and low-income earners as part of the promises by the government to provide housing for the citizens. Sarki said under the credit facility arrange-ment, 250 housing units would be constructed in Minna, the state capital, and 150 at Suleja area of the state. He said: “Government decided on the two places for easy marketability of the houses when completed to get back what was invest-ed.”

The commissioner also explained that his ministry had given approval to five other housing developers, thereby bringing to seven, the number of developers who would build under the Public Private Partnership, PPP, arrangement with gov-ernment.

Sarki said it was part of steps to meet the target of constructing 9,000 housing units at the end of 2013.
He said: “‘Under the new arrangement, many devel-opers have shown interest in doing business with the state and today, the minis-try just approved five de-velopers along with the two other developers already working with the govern-mewnt to meet the housing target.

“With the rate we are go-ing, we will meet the target of 9,000 housing units by the end of next year.
The aim is to provide affordable houses for citizens of Niger State.
