President Goodluck Jonathan said, yesterday, that his government was prepared to deploy all resources at its disposal to combat terrorism, and other security challenges facing the nation.

Speaking in Jaji while inspecting Nigerian Army equipment on display and unveiling the locally built Amoured Personnel Carrier, APC, as part of activities to mark the 2012 Army Day, the President regretted that the nation had experienced a number of security challenges particularly in the last one year.

His words: “Let me seize this opportunity to reaffirm this administration’s resolute commitment to deploying all the resources at our disposal to ensure that the challenges of insecurity are met headlong.

“Our nation’s armed forces including the army as well as other security agencies are trying to ensure that in an integrated manner, the peace and security are restored in all the affected areas in the country.”

National Counter Terrorism Policy

The president explained that he recently approved the National Counter Terrorism Policy to give clear direction to the nation’s concerted effort in totally confronting and defeating the menace of terrorism.

While commending the interface between the army and the police and other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other insurgencies in the country, the President said it was only through such cooperation and synergy that these challenges would be adequately wiped out.

Hails the army

He hailed the Nigerian Army for the innovation in the construction of locally made APC, saying the impressive innovation and display of equipment confirmed the combat readiness of the army in the defence of the country.

He said: “I am particularly impressed in the use of direct labour by the army in many of the projects it has undertaken. Apart from saving cost, this initiative will also enhance the professional competence of our personnel.

“I urge you to continue in this manner and even evolve more innovative strategy that will enhance the contribution to national infrastructural development which is the cardinal element of our transformation agenda.”

Earlier, Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Azubike Ihejirika, had said NADACEL was an annual event which allows the army showcase its rich history, values and achievements.

Ihejirika said it also offered the army the opportunity to celebrate and honour some of their personnel who had excelled in various fields.

He said: “This year’s celebration is unique in that it is being held at the home of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corp for the first time. The uniqueness is also reflected in the theme which is ‘Partnering the civil society towards improving security’.”
