Lawyers in the nine states of the former Eastern Region have thrown their weight behind establishment of state police, as a way of reducing insecurity in the country. The Lawyers spoke under the aegis of the Eastern Bar Forum, EBF, at Umuahia, weekend.

Chairman of EBF, Mr. Kamsuodo Wodu, led members on a visit to Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State, even as Orji accused the Aba branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, of politicizing the organisation, warning that such situation was not good for the development of the profession.

Wodu said they were in the state for their quarterly meeting and informed Orji that they would present a candidate for the national president of the association in next month’s general election of the NBA, in the person of Mr. Okechuku Nwali.

Wodu told the governor that the forum was concerned about the issue of security in the country, hence it was supporting establishment of state police which he hoped would help to solve the problem.
Earlier, Orji had said the Aba branch of the NBA had always engaged in “unwarranted and ceaseless criticism” of his administration, a situation he said was worrisome, especially coming from a reputable group like lawyers.

Hesaid the branch had partially stalled the appointment of a substansive Chief Judge for some time now, lamenting that apart from dragging the government to court over the issue, the Bar had also engaged in picketing over issues like fuel subsidy removal and other matters for which other professional organisations had maintained neutral and matured position.

Orji noted that although he was not averse to criticisms, what government expected of the Aba NBA was not just to lampoon government but also to suggest the way forward rather than critising for the sake of it.

He, however, said his government had not been vindictive against the Bar despite its hard posture against government since he runs an inclusive administration.

He used the occasion to highlight his achievements in the judicial sector, including the harmonization of the salaries of law officers, providing comfortable working environment for judicial officers, provision of vehicles for judges and magistrates and employment of 50 members as judges of mobile courts, saying that he needed the support and cooperation of lawyers, not the other way round.
