افتراضي Akindele - Jonathan is thinking well of our nation

Generally, I think Mr. President is thinking well of the nation, but there is little inadequacy in his approach to current national problems. He is giving us both sunshine and darkness.

The sunshine is on the unity of Nigeria by which he meant well. He urged us to be tolerant, be ready to cohabit, remain as one because unity is strength. These are lofty ideas and I agree with him.
On the other hand, I guess, his idea not to declare his assets publicly does not send right signals to the nation.
He should be a good example for others to copy.

What do you make of him on this issue?
He appeared adamant. No need to be so, because it means no other person will be compelled since he is not publicly declaring his assets. As for corruption, his body language does not appear to support anti-corruption fight. I would think that in Nigeria of today, the greatest devil beclouding the nation is corruption in low and high places. Corruption need to be tackled. For not declaring his assets in public, it’s not a right signal.

How about the question of security?
For security, we know that he knows.
Things he knows, we don’t know. I concede that to him, give him benefit of doubt – for the sacking of the National Security Adviser, General Andrew Azazi and the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Haliru Bello. He has done that for the benefit of the nation.
For the replacement of Azazi with Colonel Sambo Dasuki, I want him to resume and start work before I can judge.

What about electricity power supply. Is the President on course?
For power, there had been several efforts, appearing as nebulous idea. Power is the engine room of the economy of any nation. our power situation is not alright, therefore killing the economy of the nation. Realising that so much amount of money had been spent, yet no results.

Let’s ask: how did Ghana do it? How did other nations do it? Because I feel that by now, there should be positive signal on power. The power situation in the country 20 years ago was better than now. But the population has increased tremendously which can be understood.
Are there no plans envisaging that 10, 20 years time, expectations that the population will increase, and put this into consideration!

Where has the money gone? We should be more serious. Starting from the pre-paid meter, we should make it work. It’s deliberate act by some people that power should not be available.

President Jonathan is still pushing ahead with his plan to rename the University of Lagos after MKO Abiola. Do you agree with the name change?
I’m a great Akokite, but not withstanding, what is the sense of our history as a nation? Though some people say there is nothing in a name. But there so much in a name. I guess that Mr. President threw it to the West. Abuja is best to immortalise Chief Abiola. The stadium can be renamed after him. Abuja is the control cord.

If not the stadium, other monuments there can be so named. Some people argued that Harvard University was named after an individual. Before, it was just five years old when the original name was changed to Harvard because Mr. Harvard contributed so much to the growth and development of the university. Why not Abuja University that has just been established be changed to Abiola University. Why is the University of Lagos with 50 years of excellence be changed.

But what will happen if the National Assembly pass the Bill to change the name?
Even if the Bill is passed, it will still take a long time, because the Alumni, students, etc will be in court over the matter. If not favourable, they will go to Appeal Court, and even the Supreme Court which has the final say on the matter.
Both sides should seek dialogue, backroom dialogue, so that Jonathan won’t feel dusted. Give and take, the President has power to pronounce. The matter can be resolved with due process followed.
