Jonathan Gave His Reason For Defence Minister Dismissal. President Goodluck Jonathan said he had to fire His former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Andrew Owoye Azazi (rtd)and the former Defence Minister, Dr. Mohammed Bello Haliru in order to keep up with dynamics of fighting the Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking during a two- hour media chat yesterday, President Jonathan said since the Boko Haram constantly modify their method of operation, the federal government must be proactive by engaging new methods and personnel if it must win the war. According to him, “they (Boko Haram) change their tactics everyday; so you must also begin to change your personal, we will continue to adjust. It is not as if the old hands are not good, but you also have to change your own tactics. “If you use one thing and it didn’t work, you must change the personnel; change your style and strategy. We think that a time will come when some other hands should come in to do things slightly differently, not that the people there didn’t work hard. We will continue to adjust our security architecture and where there is need to change personnel to work into our programme, we will surely do.” Speaking on the issue of dialogue with the Boko Haram sect, President Jonathan said much as the matter kept coming up, government cannot dialogue with a faceless group. “The issue of dialogue continues to come up, to me in particular, the Boko Haram members are Nigerians and I will not want to lose the life of one Nigerian, I will rather get a criminal so that we can retrain that person like we retrained the Niger Delta militants, so that they will become productive. The President said: “I would want a situation where the Boko Haram people will stop the rubbish they are doing so that they can come and contribute to our economy. I would want a situation that the government dialogues with the Boko Haram, but they remain faceless. Nobody can come forward and tell you that he is the leader of Boko Haram, to answer why they are doing what they are doing. “We cannot dialogue with a group that remains faceless. We must have a face to tell us why you are doing what you are doing and then of course we dialogue.” While reacting to criticisms about His recent trip to Brazil at the height of attacks by the Boko Haram in some parts of the country, the President said the group cannot halt activities of government. He stressed that all arms of government will continue to carry out national and international engagements irrespective of the Boko Haram threats. “Boko Haram and their sponsors can never and will never stop Nigeria from moving forward. Boko Haram cannot bring us to our knees. In spite of damages they have done, the country must move on,” he said. Reacting to issues surrounding His refusal to publicly declare His assets, President Jonathan said the issue of public asset declaration was based on principle and not a matter of law. He said he won’t publicise His worth no matter the pressure. “I have nothing to hide, you don’t need to publicly declare your asset as a public office holder; it is a matter of principle. I think it is just playing to the gallery. I am not going to declare because if I do, all public officers must also declare. “It is not Jonathan’s declaration of asset that will stop Boko Haram; it is not declaration of assets that will improve the economy. If because Jonathan has not declared, they want to play politics with it, they should continue to play politics with it,” the President said. On public perception of His government, Jonathan said it is normal For the people to be impatient with government saying “people have not even abused me enough, there is going to be more abuses, but after that, the people will begin to see change.”
