Deputy House Leader Kill by Gunmen
It was a harvest of deaths, yesterday as Gunmen struck in Yobe, Gombe, Kano, Plateau and Ogun states, killing scores of people and leaving many with various degrees of injuries. The Deputy Leader of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Adamu Degubi, was murdered at his residence in Potiskum local government area of the state.
Until his death, Degubi represented Nangere constituency in the state House of Assembly. Those who spoke to LEADERSHIP after the attack said the Gunmen came at 7:46am, shot and killed Degubi and then left the area. The killing of Degubi, according to an eyewitness, followed after the suspected gunmen’s arrival in a 1998 Honda model vehicle. They fired several gunshots into his head and chest, and later disappeared with their vehicle into the bushy area. Confirming the killing, police spokesman Adamu Salihu, said: “I am first hearing the attacks and killing of politicians in the town. When we get the report, we send our men to the area for investigation.” Speaking shortly after the incident, the speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, said:
“One of our members was shot and killed by suspected Gunmen at his Tandari residence today at about 7:46am. Degubi was about to go to his office in Damaturu, the state capital, when Gunmen numbering about four ambushed him on the way and shot him in the head and chest, before he slumped and died.” He added that the Assembly received the killing with “shock,” saying: “Our members are continually being exposed to the gunmen’s serial killings. When I got the information of the killing of Degubi, who is very hardworking, dedicated and honest, it was surprising and shocking.”
Gunmen Kill SSS in Gombe Meanwhile, the director of the State Security Service (SSS) in Gombe State, Mr Bitrus Asher, has announced that unknown Gunmen had killed a retired officer of the SSS, Malam Aliyu Abubakar, in Gombe. Asher told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Abubakar was shot by the Gunmen in Yulunguruza Quarters in Gombe at about 6.30 pm on Monday while he was performing ablution in his friend’s house. The director added that the deceased was shot in the back and was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, where he died. Asher also said the deceased was buried yesterday and that security operatives in the state were investigating the matter. He said that no arrest had been made.
Gunmen Kill 6 in Kano Unknown Gunmen also opened fire on some people at Rimin Kebe in Tudun Murtala, Ungogo local government area of Kano State, killing six in the process. An eyewitness confirmed to one our correspondents yesterday that the incident occurred at about 10pm on Monday while many others were seriously wounded.
According to the eyewitness, the Gunmen stormed the area in a Honda Civic car and opened fire on the unsuspecting victims. The victims were sitting in front of a House when the Gunmen attacked the crowd and suddenly zoomed off, he said. When contacted, the police public relations officer, DSP Rilwanu Mohammed Dutse confirmed the incident and however said only three persons were killed during the incident. He however said that investigations had since commenced while security operatives had been drafted to the affected area to intensify security.
2 FGC Kano students killed, 4 others wounded Meanwhile authorities of the Federal Government College (FGC), Kano, have confirmed the killing of two of its students by unknown Gunmen yesterday, but said the attack was carried out outside the school premises. It said contrary to media reports that Gunmen attacked the school on Monday evening, its students were the victims of the attack in a shopping area at ‘Yar Akwa area of Na’ibawa Quarters.
It was gathered that the killings might be as a result of robbery carried out around the area. It was further learnt that while two students were killed, four others were wounded in the attack contrary to the report carried by an online news agency. According to the school authorities, the affected students were day students and were attacked after they left the school at about 6pm.
“We don’t know yet what precipitated the attack but certainly two of our students were killed while four others were wounded outside the school,” a source said. The vice-principal (admin), Mrs. Elizabeth Kasuwa, confirmed the incident yesterday and said the students had been de-boarded from the school in view of their final examinations. According to her, all of the affected students are male students who are about taking their final examination and were therefore de-boarded.
She explained that the school’s management had visited Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) where the corpses of the two students were deposited in the mortuary while the other students who were injured in the attack were receiving treatment in the emergency ward of the hospital. Our correspondent gathered that normal academic activities were going on in the school. police public relations officer Tanimu Mohammed Dutse confirmed the attack, saying that the killings took place around ‘Yar Akwa area, near some shops. He said that Gunmen suspected to be robbers might be responsible for the attack which led to the killing of two people and wounding of four others.
Suspected Fulani herdsmen Kill 2 in Plateau village At least two people were killed by hoodlums suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in Chakarum village in Vwang district of Jos South local government area of Plateau State. LEADERSHIP gathered that the attack took place at about 7:30 pm, leaving Dung Mwantiyi and Nyago Pam dead. It was gathered that the suspected Fulani men laid ambush on the villagers who were returning from a weekly market and shot one person dead on the spot while the other gave up the ghost at Vom Christian Hospital in Jos South local government area.
The management committee chairman of Jos South, Hon. Peter Vwang Dung confirmed the incident in a press statement signed by information officer Simon Bitrus in Jos. The special adviser on media and publicity to the governor of Plateau State, Hon. Ayuba Pam, described the incident as sad as it happened after the Sunday suicide bombings at Christ Chosen Church at Rukuba Road in Jos.
Gunmen attack Ogun monarch, machete ex-lawmaker Also, six Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins yesterday night invaded the palace of the Alakenne of Ikenne, Oba Adeyinka Onakade, and attacked him alongside his lawyer, Omosanya Solaja. Solaja, a former member of the state House of Assembly, was macheted and thrown down from a one-storey building.
The gunmen, according to an eyewitness, stormed the monarch’s palace located on Bankole Street, Ikenne, at about 7.45pm and unleashed terror. Our source confirmed that Oba Onakade was with some community leaders when the assailants came calling. The monarch was seriously manhandled in the operation which lasted about 40 minutes. The source added that the suspects further smashed Solaja’s head with a bottle after which they threw him down a storey building.
The Gunmen later made away with the monarch’s car, an undisclosed sum of money and his wife’s jewelry. He said, “The incident was an assassination attempt. Kabiyesi was with some community leaders at his palace. About six men, fully armed with sophisticated weapons, came and rough-handled the monarch. “Initially when the Gunmen came, they repeatedly asked for Solaja.
They shouted: where is your lawyer? Where is your lawyer? “When they saw Solaja, they smashed his head with a bottle and also macheted him severely. They also threw him from a storey building. “The former lawmaker became unconscious when he was thrown down. But sympathisers quickly rushed him to hospital.” A family source, who confirmed the attack, said the injured former lawmaker had been taken to hospital and responding to treatment. When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said he was yet to get details of the attack.
