House Commitee Rejects Subsidy Removal

Members of the House of Representatives Joint committee on Finance, Appropriations, Legislative Budget and Research and National Planning have asked the Federal Government to shelve its proposals to remove Subsidy on petroleum products.

The committees, in their report on the Medium Term Expenditure Frame work (MTEF) presented to the House on Wednesday, said the proposal on fuel Subsidy Removal as contained in the Fiscal Strategy Paper is premature.

"Sources other than relying on savings from proposed Subsidy removal, as part of financing items for expected deficit should be explored," the MPs suggested in the 2012-2015 MTEF document.

Daily Trust gathered that all principal officers of the House met with Presidential Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday night with the exception of Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. The president was said to have pleaded with them to reconsider their stance on the matter.

The principal officers, according to the source, arrived the Villa at 8:30pm and met with the President for two hours. "We told Mr President that we have to consult with our colleagues on the matter," the source, a principal officer, who spoke off record, said.

Although the report was listed on the order paper yesterday, it was not considered and the scheduled stakeholders' conference on Subsidy Removal by the House Committee on Petroleum downstream was called off at the last minute.

Speaking to newsmen on the matter, committee chair Rep Dakuku Peterside (PDP, Rivers) said they had to cancel the conference because major stakeholders invited were attending the International Bar conference in the United Arab Emirates.
