Two members of National Union of Road Transport Workers Die

Two members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ibadan, Oyo State, lost their lives on Saturday.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the deceased were those who sustained injuries when a faction of the Union clashed with members of the newly inaugurated caretaker committee of the Union last Thursday.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the Two died at the hospital where they were receiving treatment.

It will be recalled that no fewer than 10 persons were severely injured on Thursday when some members of the Union attacked members of the committee.

A group, in a statement signed by its coordinator, Comrade Hammid Yusuf, in Ibadan on Sunday, while recalling that dangerous weapons were used during the fracas, disclosed that the governor had a secret meeting with Two factional leaders, during which he urged them to support and cooperate with his administration on the issue of the caretaker committee.

As a result, the group said that the caretaker committee chairman, Taofeek Oyerinde, invited the leaders of the factions, who were already in control of Iwo Road and Ojoo motor parks for a meeting at Olomi last Thursday during which there was a misunderstanding.

According to the group, violence broke out at the meeting because a leader of one of the factions, Mr Mukaila Lamidi also known as Auxiliary, was not ready to hand over the control of the Iwo Road and Ojoo motor parks to the caretaker committee chairman.

The group noted that this was the cause of the fracas. It said such an occurrence was not unexpected since the state government had refused to obey court judgment on the NURTW crisis in the state.
