CHAIRMAN, National Consultative Committee on cancer Control, Professor Francis A. Durosinmi-Etti, has said 101,797 new cases of cancer are recorded yearly in Nigeria.

Professor Durosinmi-Etti, who spoke at the 50th anniversary and annual general meeting of the Association of Radiologists of West Africa (ARAWA), also put the financial cost of cancer on Nigeria at N1.3 trillion.

Stating that curing cancer was not cheap, though its prevention was cheaper, Professor Durosinmi-Etti added that breast and cervical cancers accounted for over 50 per cent of cancers in Nigeria.

Lamenting that in the future years, cancer cases would rise if active preventive and control measures were not taken, Professor Duro-sinmi-Etti called on the Federal Government to consider putting cancer management and investigation under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The medical expert said many cancers could be cured if detected early, while he charged the people to go for screening for common cancers prevalent in the country, as well as avoid cancer causative factors.

The causative factors, according to him, included tobacco products, sun, infective agents, poor diet, obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

Earlier, the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, had described cancer as a disease with a devastating effect, while he urged the association to continue to be in the forefront of implementing evidence-based strategies for early detection of cancer and cancer treatment.

Ajimobi, who spoke through the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said his government had increased its commitment for cancer prevention and control.
