A free and compulsory sport activity in Cross River State-Imoke
Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke demonstrated last weekend that his avowed commitment to grassroots sports development was no fluke, when he declared in Calabar during the closing ceremony of the Schools athletics and swimming championships that sports was now compulsory kids in all the local government areas in the State.

He did not stop there. Senator Imoke stated categorically that all participants at the Cross River primary and secondary schools championships must not appear barefooted and also must not be clothed in rag tag uniform.

“I’m going to force all sleeping local government chairmen to wake up. All the kids of school age in the State must be presented with an opportunity to express themselves in sports and academics,” said Imoke to a roaring applause at the U.J Esuene stadium.

He added that his three-year old grassroots sports agenda will be given more impetus as he was highly elated by the success recorded so far by the programme. “I will sustain the programme and I’m glad that we have a passionate team of organisers and passionate participants.

“All the kids must be well kitted and no one should be running barefooted. Whatever they need to succeed will be provided.”

This outpouring of emotion by the governor was as a result of the high standard performance put up by the young athletes in their respective events. It was particularly thrilling that some these kids showed signs that they have been well groomed in athletics and it only remain to be seen where the next five years will take them.

“From this group we expect the crop of our athletes for 2014 National Sports Festival. We are developing our kids to be champions in both sports and academics,” the governor added.

Commenting on the level of competition, consultant to the programme Bruce Ijirigho stated that they have been able to create a large pool of young athletes in the State. He added that the coaches were working hard to see that these young athletes get the best of training.

“We had so many kids wishing to participate. We have to push up the previous ones we had on the programme.

“There was this eight year kid coming for the first time I reluctantly allowed him to run and to my surprise he was able to beat those that have been on ground before him.

“There were also over-aged kids. We decided to give them a run in and the best three will be called into camp for grooming,” said Dr. Bruce

The State commissioner for sports, Patrick Ugbe disclosed that the state government was very impressed with the out come of the programme adding that Cross River will boast of a crop of elite athletes in the near future.

“We are already seeing the result of what we are doing here and we are pleased with the progress.

“These kids are truly under-18. Based on the training and academic schedule we have put on ground we expect to see a brighter future for them,” said Mr. Ugbe.

At the end of the four-day championships Calabar South local government topped the primary school medals table with 6 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze. Bekwara was second with 6 gold 6 silver and 3 bronze while Yala was third with 1 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze.

Akpabuyo won the secondary schools category with 10 gold, 11 silver and 4 bronze. Ikom was second with 9 gold 4 silver and 3 bronze and Abi was third place with 8 gold, eight silver and 6 bronze.
