National Assembly Please Dont Kill Cassava -AFN. Farmers protest rejection of cassava bread
Hundreds of placardcarrying protesters last week stormed the National Assembly, following the decision by the House of Representatives, to reject an Executive Bill seeking the inclusion of cassava in bread production.

The protesters, on the platform of the Association of Farmers in Nigeria denounced rejection of the Bill, which was thrown out at the second reading.

The association included: Agbekoya Farmers Association, Nigerian Cassava Producers, processors, exporters and royal fathers.

Some of the placards read: Please Dont Kill Cassava; Who Is Patriotic, NAFDAC or House of Representatives - Agbekoya; Save our Jobs; Dont starve Nigerians who elected you; You ate cassava to grow up; Foreign food means foreign debt; NAFDAC says yes to cassava, among others.

Executive Director, Agro Development Technology Initiative, Prof. Alfred Ihekoronye, said the health reasons for rejection of the Bill, was not backed by scientific evidence.

President Goodluck Jonathan had, earlier this year, launched the commercialisation of cassava bread to promote the governments policy to include 40 per cent into its production, even as he promised new tax incentives for cassava flour millers and processors.

Nigeria, he said, would save N250 billion in foreign exchange from reduced wheat and flour importation, while 1.3million jobs are expected to be created under the cassava bread policy.
