Senate Tasks Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council On Revenue Generation. The Senate committee on education has charged the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to come up with innovative ideas of Revenue generation rather than depend on government funds to carry out their Research programmes.

This call was made by the vice chairman of the committee, Prof. Adeyeye Olusola during an oversight visit of the committee to the Council over the weekend.

Olusola said: “As a Research council, you should take pride in commercialising your products instead of always depending on funds and grants from the government. It is not wise to always depend on the government to do everything for you.”

According to him “You must find innovative ways of tackling the seemingly persistent problem of lack of fund. Part of your job should be outreach programmes where you can bring in jobs from outside. There is supposed to be partnership with state and local governments and even the private sector in curriculum Development from where the Council can generate revenue.”

Also speaking, the chairman of the Senate committee on education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije intimated the Council that they were on an over sight function to NERDC to ascertain the judicious and effective use of resources as well as the verification of physical evidence on ground.

While enquiring of the ongoing 2011 physical year key projects of the Council as well as the 2012 proposed key projects, Chukwumerije stated that the interactive session between the Senate and the management of NERDC was imperative for achieving Educational Research Council goals.

Earlier in his briefing to the Senate committee, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma had told the committee that as a Research institute, NERDC does not generates fund but receives appropriation from federal government which it makes judicious use of.

He intimated the committee that the Council has developed a 9-year basic education curriculum; teachers handbook on the implementation of 9-year basic education curriculum as well as revised new school books for the 9-year basic education curriculum.

Another achievement included reviewing of senior school curriculum and introduction of 34 trades/entrepreneurship subjects so as to equip school leavers for relevant trade in case he/she decides not to further after secondary education.
