President Confirms Nigeria won't Break - up. AGAINST fears of a possible disintegration. President Goodluck Jonathan, on Sunday assured that the country will not Break up and has requested citizens to support his administration to accomplish its transformation agenda.

He spoke at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, during a special inter-denominational service to mark this year's Democracy Day.

The President reiterated that the country was not prepared for the current terrorism challenge as it came like a thief at night.

Noting that he would be addressing the nation tomorrow, he said even though some people were busy predicting the disintegration of Nigeria, there would be no such thing.

According to him,“No individual or group, no matter their ambition or selfish purpose will be able to divide this nation. Nigeria will never disintegrate.”

He added that the country’s security agencies had stepped up efforts to deal with the security challenge by updating their capacity and equipment.

“We have done a lot and committed resources to advance our security architecture in order to tackle terrorism and God willing, we shall overcome,” the President said.

He pointed out that Nigeria was a powerful nation that was very well respected in the comity of nations because of its population, size, geography and the ability of its leaders to sustain democracy for the past 13 years.

President Jonathan thanked Nigerians for their consistent prayers and support and specially commended the Armed Forces for their professionalism.

“We have to specially thank our Armed Forces for being professional all through the period of crisis we have had to face since 2007. It is our own ability to sustain our democracy that gives us the moral rights to approach any African nation at a time of any military interruption to demand a return to the status quo.

That is why our Chief of Defence Staff commands the respect of his colleagues who sometimes take over power in their countries, anytime he goes there,” President Jonathan said.

Akinola speaks on national unity
In his sermon, entitled, "Know the truth and the truth shall set you free," former Primate of the Anglican Communion, Jasper Peter Akinola, urged Nigerians not to be deceived by the antics of Boko Haram as he noted that they were involved in a Jihad against Christians.

He observed that there were no clear signs of genuine national unity in the country as leaders were interested in their own and no national identity.

He said: "We have ignored the truth. Boko Haram must be seen in the right context. It is a continuation of the past. Shun all political claims that Boko Haram is not against Christianity. It is. It has been going on since 1966. They are committed to Jihad. You can't stop them. It is their religious obligations. They have been doing it for 36 years they have not stopped and they won't stop.

"Boko Haram means Jews and Christians are abomination. They have been unleashing terror since 1966 and they have a mandate. This problem is not peculiar to Nigeria. Many other stakeholders are disenchanted but waiting for their time. They want to eliminate infidels which include you Mr President.

"You open yourself to ridicule if you open dialogue to a group that has made the country ungovernable. Don't treat them with kid gloves. You don't. Dialogue with crime. The problem is not Jonathan, it is because we started in wrong way and continue same way."

He further noted that "We are a blood thirsty and blood letting society with no regards for sanctity of life. Nigeria is at war against itself. Selfish politicians doing all things on basis of political exigency.

"A word of truth about our past amalgamation. No consent from the South and North. It was done for political and economic gains of the colonials. Our leaders failed to gather the authentic representatives of Nigerians to seek the kind of independent Nigeria they want.”

In another development, security has been beefed up in Lagos ahead of the Democracy Day celebration, Mr Joseph Jaiyeoba, spokesman for the Lagos State police command, has said.

Jaiyeoba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday that the development was in compliance with a directive from the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohamed Abubakar.

He said that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, had directed area commanders and divisional police officers to beef up security within their jurisdictions, to avoid any ugly situation.

According to him, security men had been deployed to man strategic places across the state, in line with the directive.

Jaiyeoba said operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and the Rapid Response Squad had also been mobilised to work with the regular patrol teams.
