Sultan's Contribution In Insecurity. The Sultan of Sokoto and other leading traditional rulers and Muslim leaders in the North met yesterday in Kaduna, trying to find solution to the wave of violence in the region.

Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar called for the use of dialogue to end the bloodshed, which he said some people were taking advantage of to “wreak havoc” on the society.

The level of insecurity, especially in the North, “is not only a source of worry to all of us but purely it is a way of tearing apart the very fabric of our religious, social and economic life,” Abubakar said at the opening of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam’s central council meeting.

“We must come back to our senses as a family and say enough is enough. The bloodshed must stop. Each and every one of us must come to realise that we cannot continue on this destructive path.

“We must open active, meaningful and essential channels of dialogue and communication to ensure that we listen to those who have genuine grievances and to take genuine efforts to address such grievances.

“As an Ummah (community), we must take a resolute stand against those who take advantage of this unfortunate situation to wreak havoc on the society in pursuit of their narrow interest.

“Allah (SWA) is never indifferent to the plight of His servants; He will definitely put to shame those who seek to violate the honour and the sanctity of Muslims. We must at all times seek Allah’s intervention through prayers for there is no calamity or disaster that he cannot defend,” the Sultan, who is president-general of the JNI, added.

The North has been plagued by incidents of shootings and bombings in the past two years, mainly blamed on the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lid da’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram.

Mediated talks between the Federal Government and the sect broke off prematurely in March, but officials have repeatedly said government was desirous of dialogue.

Recently, Defence Minister Bello Halliru Mohammed said government would use traditional rulers to try to talk to Boko Haram to stop the violence.

But Sultan Sa’ad did not mention the sect by name in his speech yesterday when he spoke about dialogue, and did not say if his call for talks had any link with the government’s aspiration.

Abubakar urged people in the position of authority to take concrete steps of checking poverty because “the current level of poverty, especially in the Northern states, cannot be acceptable in any decent society. We can hide behind our rhetoric but we cannot run away from the stark realities, which characterise the daily lives of our people.”

In his address, the Kaduna State governor Patrick Yakowa, represented by his deputy Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, said if all the followers of Islam and Christianity would put the teachings of the two religions into practice, there would never be violence or crisis anywhere.

A communiqué is expected at the end of the meeting. Emirs and Islamic scholars who attended the meeting include Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, Emir of Zazzau Shehu Idris, Emir of Kano Ado Bayero, Shehu of Borno Umar Garbai El-Kanemi and Etsu Nupe Yahaya Abubakar.
