افتراضي Review Of Nigeria, US Bi-national Commission @ Washington

Buoyed by the successes recorded by the Nigeria, US Bi-national Commission (BNC), since its inauguration two years ago, a high-level meeting has been slated for Washington to undertake a Review of the commission.

Disclosing this at the weekend, Nigerian Ambassador to US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, said the meeting billed to hold on June 4 and 5 would involve all the five components of the BNC and would discuss what had been achieved so far and the way forward.

Various meetings had been held, both in Nigeria and US, on specific components of the BNC, but next month's meeting would involve all the five components.

The focal points of the BNC are: good governance; transparency and integrity; energy and investment; food security and agriculture; Niger Delta and regional security co-operation.

Early this year, the Niger Delta and regional security component was split into two on US suggestion, thereby bringing the components to five.

Adefuye said five Nigerian ministers and Permanent Secretaries would attend the high-level meeting with top US officials.

The Nigerian envoy also disclosed that during the recent meeting of Vice-President Namadi Sambo and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, at the White House, Biden told Sambo that Nigeria was US anchor in Africa and with the success of the BNC, it was time to take it to a higher level.

Adefuye said he had now come to understand that what that meant was that the two Assistant Secretaries of State heading each of the five components of the BNC had now been given powers to implement decisions reached at that level without reference to White House or the State Department.

Adefuye said there had also been suggestions that the BNC, which is being headed by Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Olufemi Ashiru, should be headed by the Vice Presidents of both countries.

He added that with the tremendous success recorded by the Nigeria-US BNC, a similar agreement had been signed with Canada and machinery is in motion to sign similar agreements with other countries that had made such requests.
