40 ex-Niger-Delta militants trained by NMTI Anambra

Authorities of the National Metal-lurgical Training Institute (NMTI), Onit-sha, Anambra Stat, have disclosed that they have trained no fewer than 40 members of the former Niger-Delta militants, who were granted am-nesty by the federal Gov-ernment during the early days of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s administration. They said the aim of training the ex-militants was to enable them be-come part of the required middle level skilled man-power needed for Nige-ria’s economic and tech-nological advancement. The Acting Director of the institute, Engr. Ranti Ajamolaya, who disclosed this in his office yesterday in a chat with newsmen, said the train-ing of the ex-militants was part of the Institute’s voluntary contribution towards promoting skill acquisition among the youths in the country.

Ajamolaya further disclosed that during the nine-month exercise, the youths had been subject-ed to a rigorous training in pipeline welding and steel fabrication, after which they exhibited a high sense of responsibil-ity and technical ability throughout the duration of their training exercise at the institute.

He recalled that the institute, which is a para-statal under the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel, was established about 32 years ago by the Federal Government with the technical as-sistance of the German government, adding that since inception, it had enormously contributed towards the training of skilled man-power devel-opment in the steel in-dustry and had equally offered training of staff of steel industries across the country.

The Director also stat-ed that, with the sudden collapse of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, the Aladja Stee Complexl, the Os-hogbo Steel Rolling Mill, and others, the institute resorted to admitting private students who are trained to acquire techni-cal skills for Nigerian in-dustries.
