NLC Stands Against Electricity Tariff Review

The acting Secretary General of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mr. Owei Lakemfa, yesterday said no to Federal Government’s planned increase in Electricity tariff.

He believes the government should devote its time and energy to appropriate billing and provision of regular power supply instead of arbitrary increase of tariff.

Government announced on Monday its intention to effect an increase in Electricity Tariff from next month.

Mr. Lakemfa, who spoke on the phone, said the NLC would soon take a decision on the issue.

He said it makes no sense if government does not make Electricity available and affordable to Nigerians, adding that experience has shown that only the poor pay Electricity bill in the country while the rich wallow in affluence at public expense.

Owei lamented that instead of improving the standard of living in Nigeria, the Federal Government has resolved to aggravate the situation through Electricity Tariff review.

The National Executive Council (NEC) on Wednesday approved N50 billion to subsidise Electricity Tariff in its Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

President Goodluck Jonathan noted that the MYTO includes low Electricity Tariff for the poor, guaranteed energy efficiency and N50 billion subsidy component for the next two years.

Minister of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji, distinguishing between fuel subsidy and Electricity subsidy said: “It is not the same thing at all. That is something I must emphasise. One is production subsidy, the other is consumption subsidy.

“In production subsidy, what the government is doing is done in every part of the world. That is to say that Electricity is a product of need; that people should have Electricity whether you are poor or rich. And to make sure that the poor will have electricity, there is going to be subsidy.

“And this is done because distribution companies know who has the electricity; not the money you give to somebody. It is about all of you are billed and that bill to the poor is what is subsidised. And it is not money that is just given to somebody. It does not go to anybody like that.

“In every distribution company, you have classes. The R1 Consumers, there is a certain quantum of Electricity going to them. The R2 Consumers will have certain amount of Electricity going to them. It is that R1 that is being subsidised. There is no magomago (foul play) about it. So, the subsidy is not something that is theoretical. That is what government is going to subsidise and you can be sure that it is going to be applied relatively well.”
