Governor Amaechi advises governors of northern states to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector

Chairman of the Nigerian governors Forum and Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has advised governors of northern states to declare a state of emergency in the educational sector and vote enough funds to it “as a way of addressing certain prevalent social malaise in their region.”

He spoke at the ceremony to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (OAU) involving the governors, the federal government and other stakeholders on Almajiri education.

This is as the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of Nigerian Council of Traditional Rulers, AlhajiSa’adAbubakar III counselled that the Almajiri problem should not be “religionised and seen as a Muslim problem but should be looked at from the social and economic angles or the programme will lack sustainability and fail.”

Vice President Namadi Sambo assured at the ceremony that the government has the will to implement the programme, which will give every Nigerian child an opportunity to be educated.

Amaechi also advocated the re-christening of the Almajiri Educational Programme to reflect respect and dignity as his inquiry showed that its present name means school for beggars “and Nigerian children cannot beg for education, which was their right.”

He identified poverty and ignorance as the twin problems that have degenerated into insecurity as he insisted that ignorance of the mind was extremely dangerous.

“It is a right of every Nigerian child to be educated. So, I think it is better we call it migrant education or special education or whatever name you like and get Nigerians of whatever form to study there and be privileged to compete with other children.

“I have always said to my colleagues that there is the need for the federal government to declare an education emergency in the North first and try as much as possible to disburse enough funds to manage education in the North.”
