An Open Letter to Gov. Fashola

Dear Governor,
I must confess I was one of those that never saw anything extra ordinary in your achievements in Lagos State, but today that perception is long gone. I was in Nigeria in 2009 to see for myself what people have been proclaiming extra ordinary performance of yours in the governance of our Lagos State.

At the end of my visitation, I gave you some credits – Then I always explained my credit to your governance with this parable - A region where those in power are supposed to be given those they are governing N100, but everybody that has the opportunity of being in that hot seat, upon getting there after they had promised giving the N100 to those they are governing, decided to be collecting N50 from these poor people, but in your own case instead of collecting the N50 from the people like your counterparts or giving the people the promised N100, you decided to be giving them N10. With this in my mind, my rating was not too favourable for you, sir.

People at home always let me know that among your equals you are the numero uno, however, that was ever before Rochas Okorocha came into the picture. With this, I felt a change of mind, that majority could not be wrong after all, that my standards might be too high for Nigeria because of my location. Not quite long after that, I was shocked again when you suddenly came with a new school/tuition fee for the students of Lagos State University- this time an astronomical increase in the tuition, never minding the affordability of this by the people who voted you into the office. The students demonstrated against this, but instead of listening to the voice of the people you decided to listen to your own voice. And that prevailed at the end of the day.

I still find it difficult that our supposed action and peoples governor, that we one day hoped would be among the progressives that would change Aso Rock for better is embarking on this journey of no return. Sir, if the tuition must be increase at all, there should be a plan in place for those that should be in school but cannot afford it. This could be in terms of bursaries, scholarships and loans with small interest that would be paid back after graduation upon getting a job. I find it difficult to believe that this is a grand plan, by you in collaboration with our elites who enjoyed free and affordable education during their days, not to let the children of the poor enjoy same in their time.

Action Governor, please for posterity sake, it is not too late to rescind this decision of yours. People have positive view of your image and personality, and these are the same people who you would canvass for their votes if you are going for a higher office in the land. I have no doubt that you have good intention in increasing this tuition, but sir, this is not the right time to do so. It is not the right time because majority of Lagosians, who happened not to be working in the oil & gas industry, banking or the telecommunication industries and other blue chip companies are not earning the minimum wage. And earning the minimum wage is not even an assurance that one would be able to pay this huge tuition fee.

As a result of this, majority of us Lagosians cannot afford this tuition. We would be looking forward to your assistance in fixing a tuition that could be affordable by all or putting in place the necessary measures that would enable those that should be in school but cannot afford this tuition will benefit from. Thanks you sir.

Your Sincerely,

Raji Oladele

An Open Letter to Gov. Fashola
