A’Ibom Plans 10 Community Fish Farms for Job Creation

The Akwa Ibom State government is to establish 10 Community Fish Farms in each of the 10 federal constituencies in the state. Governor Godswill Akpabio stated this at the weekend during the commissioning of the National Directorate of Employment/Millenium Development Goals Skills Acquisition Training Centre and flagging-off of a training programme at Afaha Ikot Ebak in Essien Udim Local Government Area over the weekend. Represented by his deputy, Mr. Nsima Ekere, the governor said the Community Fish Farms would produce 5,700 metric tonnes annually valued at N2.4b and will generate employment for 340,445 people.

He said his administration had already turned over 3,000 youths and empowered them with N500, 000 loans to establish Farms through the Integrated Farmers’ Scheme.

Akpabio said 4,500 rural women were empowered last year with N250, 000 each through the Women Agro-Entrepreneurship Development Programme (WAEDEP).

He reasoned that Nigeria could solve unemployment problem through agricultural development, pointing out that historically, agriculture has played a major role as an engine for economic growth and development the world over.

The governor said: “The England Industrial Revolution in 19th century was spawned by rising productivity and incomes in agriculture that increased the demand for manufactured goods.

“In the post-war Japan, South Korea, and more recently, Thailand, rising agricultural productivity and a shift to commercial crops served as the dynamic engines for economic growth, Job Creation and higher incomes.”

He lauded the establishment of the skills acquisition centre and commended the NDE for its commitment to providing jobs for Nigerians.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, said the establishment of the skill acquisition centre was a demonstration of the Federal Government’s concern for the plight of the unemployed youths and collective efforts in checking the problem of insecurity arising from unemployment.

He commended the development projects and programmes of Governor Godswill Akpabio, which he said had created several jobs for youths.

The minister said the Akpabio’s administration made the state one of the most peaceful and developed in the country, thereby turning it into a destination.

The Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, said the commissioning and the flagging-off of the training programme marked a significant milestone in the history of youth empowerment in the country.
