Police Arraign 6 Over N9m Staff Salaries In Bauchi

The Police in Bauchi state on Tuesday arraigned six persons before a Bauchi Chief Magistrates’ Court accused of stealing N9 million workers salary.

The money was meant for the payment of the March Salaries of workers of Katagum Local Government Council in the state.

The accused, all Staff of the council’s accounts department, were being charged for criminal conspiracy, theft, house break and negligence.

The Police prosecutor, Insp. Baba Hussaini told the court presided Over by Isa Mohammed, that the suspects collected N9, 027, 336.69 to pay the workers salaries, but kept the money in a safe and was stolen Over night.

Hussaini said that the suspects were unable to give any satisfactory explanation to the Police on their action.

According to him, the action of the suspects contravened section 288 and 196 of the Penal Code.

The suspects pleaded not guilty, and their counsel, Patrick Owoicho requested the court to release them on bail.

The prosecution opposed the application for bail on the ground that the suspects may tamper with on going investigation.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, granted the suspects bail in the sum of N200, 000 each and a surety each in like sum.

He said that the sureties must be the Ward Head where each of the suspects resides, who must write an undertaking to produce the suspect any time the court request for their appearance.

The sureties are also expected to own a certified landed property, with a market value of not less than N1 million within the court’s jurisdiction and two passport photographs.

The case was adjourned till May 8, for further mention. (NAN)
