More than 40 Journalists on Monday in Abidjan gathered around a shopping mall, Prima, to recollect the disappearance of a French–Canadian journalist, Guy Andre-Kieffer, who was working on a corruption report.

Kieffer was investigating messy deals in the Ivorian cocoa sector, which involved top government officials, in 2004 and he was last seen at the Prima car park in Treichville, Abidjan, before he disappeared.

The French and Canadian governments had launched an investigation into the disappearance of the journalist, but many believed he was killed.

Kieffer’s wife, Osange Silou-Kieffer, told newsmen that the investigation was still on, urging more commitment especially with the change of government in Cote d’Ivoire.

The former Ivorian President’s wife, Simone Gbagbo, was suspected in the death of the journalist and had appeared before a panel of enquiry to explain her role as Andre-Kieffer was last seen with her cousin at the park.

Silou-Kieffer said: “I am very happy to be here today. This is the very place where my husband disappeared. I am happy to have many people around me.

“I came to pay tribute, but above all we have not given up. We want to know the truth about what happened to him here.’’

The West Africa correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a skeleton was discovered last year in a forest in Cote D’ivoire that many believed was Andre-Kieffer’s, but the DNA investigation showed otherwise.

Cote D’ivoire has been blacklisted by Reporters Without Borders and Human Rights Watch and Committee for Protection of Journalists for alleged deliberate hunting and killing of many journalists, especially during the political crisis. (NAN)
