Madrid Aiming To Improve German Record

Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal with the aim of improving their Record on German soil.

The Whites have won once and lost 15 times in their previous 22 visits and will have a mountain to climb against a Bayern side that has won all their home games in the Champions League this season.

Bayern’s recent form in the Bundesliga has been disappointing as they lost 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund before playing to a 0-0 draw with Mainz, effectively handing the title to Dortmund.

However, this could motivate them to do even better in the Champions League, especially with the prospect of playing the final in their own stadium.

The Bavarians reached this stage of the tournament by beating Olympique Marseille 4-0 on aggregate and will be hoping that their star players like Mario Gomez, Arjen Robben will continue with their good form.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger reiterated the importance of this clash and hopes his side will give their best on Tuesday night.

"It's all or nothing on Tuesday. We have to go to the limits and beyond, but we can do it with our fans behind us," Schweinsteiger told the club’s website.

"It won’t be easy, and it comes down to mental strength. I hope we show the mentality which marks Bayern out."

Besides their poor Record in Germany, Madrid have been great on the road this season, winning four out of the five matches, the exception being the 1-1 draw against CSKA Moscow.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain have continued to bang in goals in all competitions with Mesut Ozil and Xabi Alonso controlling the midfield.

However, Higuain believes they have to be careful against an offensive Bayern side in order to get a good result away from home.

"We know Bayern rather well and I think they have considerable potential in attack thanks to their quality and talented players that can break our defence line,” said Higuain via the club’s website.

"We expect a good result in the first leg and we obviously don't want to lose. We want to score one goal on the road to have an advantage in the return leg.

"It would be good to win or draw with goals, but our objective is to win."

If selected for the match, this will be a special occasion for Madrid midfielder Hamit Altintop as he will have a chance of facing his former club, having been part of Bayern between 2007 and 2011.

The same is true for Bayern’s Arjen Robben who spent two seasons in the Spanish capital and will be looking forward to proving a point against his former employers.

The two sides last met during the 2006/07 season in the last 16 with Bayern going through via the away goal rule as they lost 3-2 in Spain and won 2-1 at home.

The return leg will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu April 25th.
