The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), not to Embark on the proposed nationwide Solidarity strike.

ASUU is proposing the nationwide action as a mark of Solidarity with their counterparts at the Rivers State University of Technology (RSUST) currently on a protracted dispute with the university’s management.

NANS, in a statement signed by its National President, Mohammed Dauda, said that the Solidarity Strike would disrupt the academic calendar.

The students pointed out that the Strike would cause a serious setback in the academic activities of tertiary institutions and worsen the hardships already faced by students ``particularly those in the graduating class’’.

``as far as we are concerned, the River State Government, who is the proprietor of RSUST, reserves the right to either appoint or sack, who to administer the University.

``ASUU, particularly the RSUST chapter, should also be reminded that there are other stakeholders, including students in the university, and hence should not assume the monopoly of determining how the university is administered.

``We urge ASUU at the national level to prevail on its members in RSUST to engage in further dialogue and allow majority opinion to prevail in resolving the long drawn dispute in the institution,’’ NANS said.

The statement said that the proposed Strike action was ``particularly worrisome to imagine’’ and condemned ``this fresh attempt to further disrupt the already disjointed academic calendars of Nigerian universities’’.

``It is our opinion that ASUU should take into consideration that Nigerians students, who are no parties in the dispute, are usually being made to bear the brunt of the consequences of their industrial actions,” the union stated.

The students, however, called for a change of heart from ASUU, stressing that the Strike would cause more harm than good.

“We wish to call on meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders to prevail on ASUU to shelve the idea of the proposed Strike since it is not in the interest of Nigerian students and the wobbling educational sector,’’ the students said.
