افتراضي Minister Sues For Calm Over NUT/NTI Saga

The Minister of state For education, Barr Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has sued For Calm between the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the National Teachers Institute Over the non payment of teachers allowance by the NTI after an 8-days training.

This happened yesterday at the federal ministry of education conference room when the Minister invited the management of both parties after having separate meetings with both groups.

The Minister who said he was not making brief For the NTI, said ‘most of the problem is caused by budget. When the funds are released, its usually not 100 per cent and the management of the institution is expected to prioritise its spending’.

‘NTI made a mistake of training all the teachers instead of choosing just a few based on the released budget so that what has been released will go a long way’. He categorically stated that ‘training of everyone at the same time will not be accepted so that problems do not arise’.

He appealed For Calm from the NUT and assured that furthermore, no teacher will be shortchanged as already, modalities have been put in place to ensure that there is no repeat of such mistake as already, the Minister of finance is aware of the matter.

In response, the national president of the NUT, Comrade Micheal Olukoya, stressed that For while the payment of 14,000 naira is grossly inadequate For eight days training, surchanging members of the noble profession is totally unacceptable as NTI should have known better, saying ‘teachers should not be the last to be treated when it comes to welfare’.

He lamented that the union had taken a stand and going back to tell the teachers something else will be nothing but difficult as the teachers are bound to pass a vote of no confidence on them.

To further lend a voice to their plight, the secretary general of the union called on the government to work hand in hand with the union even as it insists on payment. He said ‘let’s work together and ensure, that the money is released to these people’.

It will be recalled that only 4,000 naira out of the 14,000 naira scheduled For teachers training was paid the participants after training For eight days.
