SOUTH Africa’s ambassador to Oman, Yusuf Saloojee, is back in his post despite not answering the questions put to him by a Department of International Relations and Co-operation investigation on whether he accepted a $200,000 alleged Bribe from cellular company MTN.

Deputy director-general for public diplomacy Clayson Monyela said Mr Saloojee had returned to Oman earlier this month to ensure that South Africa Still had an ambassador to the Middle East country.

"However, the investigation against Mr Saloojee Still continues and he is going back on a temporary basis. He has Still to answer the questions put to him," he said.

Mr Monyela said the department would make a public pronouncement on the findings of the investigation when it was completed.

Ambassadorial postings are for four years and Mr Saloojee’s term in Oman should end in December.

International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane recalled Mr Saloojee about three months ago after the bribery allegations first surfaced.

MTN Group allegedly made a payment of $200,000 to property attorneys Gildenhuys Lessing Malatji on April 26 2007 towards the purchase of a home for the ambassador in South Africa. Mr Saloojee was then South Africa’s ambassador to Iran.

This allegation was made in court papers filed by MTN’s rival Turkcell in the US earlier this year.

The dispute is on the lucrative Iranian mobile market and Turkcell is claiming $4.3bn in damages from MTN. Turkcell was originally awarded the tender, but the Iranian government gave it to MTN, which now owns a 49% stake in Irancell.

A former MTN employee, Chris Kilowan, claims he made the payment to Mr Saloojee and a $400,000 Bribe to then Iranian deputy foreign minister Javid Ghorban-Oghli.
