MTN, the leading telecommunications company in Ghana, has cut the sod for the commencement of the expansion and upgrading of the existing Western Regional Public Library in Sekondi under the MTN Ghana Foundation project.

The project will involve the provision of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre, various books and other equipment needed at the Library, as well as installation of an Electronic Library, among others.

Upon completion, the Western Regional Library will mainly serve the entire Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and its immediate environs including Axim, Tarkwa, Sefwi Wiawso and Bibiani.

Samuel Appiah, Senior Manager of MTN in charge of Western and Central Regions, who disclosed these, noted that the upgrade of the regional library was part of activities marking a month-long celebration by the company in the Western Region dubbed “Oil City Fest.”

He explained that “Oil City Fest was part of MTN’s strategy to engage subscribers and all other stakeholders of the business at the regional level and to strengthen the telecommunication company’s relationship with its customers.

He noted that educational standards in the country had plummeted due to the lack of modern libraries and other educational facilities.

“So as part of our corporate social responsibility, we have taken it upon ourselves to help improve educational standards in communities within which we are situated by constructing modern educational facilities for them,” he added.

Mr. Appiah pointed out that the Western region had benefitted a lot in the area of health, education and socio-economic projects under the MTN Ghana Foundation.
He mentioned the construction of classroom block for Ahantaman Senior High School, provision of various equipment to Wassa Dunkwa and Shama Health Centres, as well as the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

Activities lined up for Oil City Fest include merchandizing blitzes in Takoradi and its environs while vendors of MTN products would receive new merchandizing materials including stickers, umbrellas and tables.

There will also be a corporate fair, retailer’s forum, health screening and health walk.

There will also be a movie night and a night of drama with Roverman Productions, a Night of Laughs and Music, golf tournament and a community football gala,” he stressed.

In a related development, the business unit of MTN has interacted with the business community in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis as part of the “Oil City Fest” celebration.

Members of the unit explained that the mission of MTN business was to deliver innovative, robust and cost effective solutions to businesses.

They explained that MTN business was happy to be supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) to expand to eventually become multinationals.

Michael Ghartey, Accounts Manager of MTN, noted that “at MTN Business, we differentiate ourselves from our competitors by providing an outstanding customer experience and working hard to meet the needs of all customers no matter how large or small they are.”
