Manchester United legend Paul Scholes identified some of the Old Trafford youngsters he feels could do as he did and make the step up into Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team.

Scholes was speaking to the Red Devils’ official website when he tipped some of the players he was working with in the youth set-up last season, before he came out of retirement, for big things.

The 37-year-old decided to retire at the end of the 2010-11 season to start coaching with the reserves and he believes has come across a talented group of players, with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Larnell Cole, Ryan Tunnicliffe and the Keane brothers, Michael and Will.

They were all part of a successful group at that level last season and Scholes feels they could have good careers at Old Trafford.
“I think they’re very good. I don’t think they lost a game last year and they went on to win the reserve team trophy,” he said when asked his opinion of the youngsters.

“There are some really good players, like Jesse [Lingard] and Larney [Larnell Cole], a really good player, good on the ball.“There’s Michael and Will [the Keane brothers], different types of player but very effective, and Tunners [Ryan Tunnicliffe] as well.

Scholes made his Manchester United debut against Port Vale in the League cup, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win, and he believes that youth stars, like the ones he mentioned, will get a chance in the first team, as Ferguson constantly keeps an eye on their ranks.

“A few of them had little spells out on loan as well, which is great for experience and if they keep working hard, the manager watches them in games and in training all the time – if he feels they’re ready he’ll throw them in.

Scholes is an example to all young players that it is possible to be a success from the academy ranks and his seamless return from retirement last season highlighted his importance to Manchester United, confirming what a rare talent he is the Premier League.
