افتراضي Ban: Discrimination Against Rural Women Must Stop To End Global Hunger

UN Secretary.-General., Ban Ki-moon says eliminating Discrimination that prevents Rural Women from realising their full potential is crucial to ending Global Hunger and poverty.
``By denying Women their rights and opportunities, we deny their children and societies a better future,” Ban said in his message on the International Day of Rural Women at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday.
He said the reality for Rural Women was that they did not own the land they farm, and were denied the financial services that could
lift them out of poverty.
Ban added that Rural Women often live without the guarantee of basic nutrition, health services and amenities such as clean water
and sanitation.
According to him, unpaid work imposes a heavy burden on them while lack of skills prevents their access to decent wage
employment, so we work to reverse the trend.
``When food and nutrition security are improved, Rural Women have more opportunities to find decent work and provide for the
education and health of their children.
``With equal access to land, credit and productive resources, Rural Women can increase their productivity and sell their goods.
``As equal members of the society, Rural Women can raise their voices as decision-makers and propel sustainable development,” Ban stressed.
He, however, said that the world had increasingly recognised the vital role that Women play in building peace, justice and democracy.
``As we approach the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), it is time to invest more in Rural women, protect their rights, and improve their status.,’’ he added.
He said in September, the UN launched a five-year initiative entitled: ``Accelerating Progress Toward the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women through economic integration and food security initiatives.''
He said the programme would be carried out jointly by the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WEP).
Ban said the programme would be implemented initially in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Nepal, Niger and Rwanda.
