The National Examination Council (NECO) says it will continue to do all it can to ensure that the Standard and integrity of the examination body remain corruption-free.

Its Head of Computer and Data processes, Dr Tayo Odukayo, gave the assurance via a telephone interview on Monday.

Odukoya was reacting to claims by some stakeholders that most public examinations were being compromised, especially at the marking and grading stages.
According to him, NECO has one of the best technologies for the purpose of examination and grading in the entire Africa.
“I can assure you that such claims are not possible with NECO, because no one can get access to our testing and evaluation devices.
“Our examinations are machine scored, and we guard the question sheets in a way that no one will be able to tamper with them.
“We use the Optical Mark Readable (OMR) numbering about 42 in Minna, which can score over 13 million scripts in one month.
“These facilities are the best and are compared to what is used by the Educational Testing Service in the USA,” he said.
He stated that the test body had developed in the past five years to be the best, adding that its technologies had been deployed to examination bodies in Nigeria and Africa.
“I know of an examination body whose processing was done with NECO technology until last year.
“I think Nigerians should know better than what they presently know or think about how we operate.
“We cannot afford to compromise anything because as a test body, we know that the future of our children and the country at large rests so much on this,” Odukoya said.
He noted that given the right facilities, and commitments on the part of the students and parents, there was no way teachers would not put in their best in terms of service delivery.
According to him, this would in turn reflect on the student’s performance.
“Take a look at the just released June /July Senior [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل] Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the same NECO, you will realise that there was an improvement in students’ performance.
“I think those who are directly involved– which are the teachers, students, parents and the government– are beginning to realise that commitment, dedication and hard work, remained the drivers of success.
“So the issue of influencing marks or results of candidates does not come in, because I know with the right thing in place, it can only get better and Nigeria will be the better for it.
“However, there are more work to be done on the part of teachers and the education administrators in a bid to Maintain Standard and improve performance,” Odukoya said.
