Former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde has admitted the team have improved after their 6-1 victory over the Lone Star of Liberia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Calabar on Saturday but insisted they must improve before the finals in January.
Nigeria picked the ticket to the 2013 tournament to be hosted by South Africa on 8-3 aggregate, making a return to the continental football fiesta after missing out on the 2012 edition. Onigbinde said the team showed more determination in the game but would still Need to improve on some aspects. “No team is perfect; they just have to Work on the aspects that make them vulnerable when playing against more creative teams. There was an improvement in the team but they must Work to improve,” Onigbinde said. “The Liberians gave all they had but it was apparent the Eagles were better. The adoption of wing-play format worked well for the Eagles because (Stephen) Keshi must have studied his opponents well before deciding on the tactics. What is important is that Nigeria won and we’ve qualified for the finals.” The CAF technical instructor also said Nigeria needed to have feared nothing when the continental football body assigned South African referee Daniel Bennett to handle the crucial game. Prior to Saturday’s game, no Nigerian team had ever won in a game officiated by Bennett in the past. Onigbinde said, “The tension (among the fans) was unnecessary. The referee didn’t chose himself, CAF did. There is a panel that decides on such matter in CAF; it is not left to an individual so there shouldn’t have been any Need for the anxiety before the game. We all saw eventually that the officiating was fair.”
