The National Assembly has said it would ensure that companies operating in The country abide by The provisions of The Local Content Act. It has also warned companies flouting The provisions of The Act to be ready to face sanctions. Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Local Content, Mr. Honorable Asita, disclosed The stance of The National Assembly when he led members of The committee on an oversight visit to The Oil and Gas Free Zone in Onne, Rivers State at The weekend.

At Intels Nigeria Limited, The major servicing company at The zone, Asita said government was taking compliance with The Act seriously and would not spare any company that violated The provisions.
He said The National Assembly would protect its integrity by taking extra-disciplinary actions against any company violating The Act, pointing out that The law of Local Content emphasises full compliance.

He said: “Every society, every system is governed by laws and rules. There is a law in place and it does not provide a choice. When a law is made, it is made with The intention that it must be complied with. “We insist on full compliance of The Local Content Law and we will not tolerate partial or non-compliance.” Addressing journalists after The visit, Asita said: “Basically, we (the committee) are here to see their level of compliance. They have given me facts and figures; it is now our responsibility to crosscheck those facts and figures with what we have, and then we will make up our minds on The next action.

“There are sanctions explicitly provided for in The law. Parliament will also protect its integrity by taking extra disciplinary actions on any company that violates The provisions of The Act.” Earlier in a presentation, The Local Content Manager of Intels, Mr. Sambo Isidor, said 60 per cent of employees in The company were from The Niger Delta, adding that The firm was already applying Local Content before The law was enacted. Isidor explained that as a major operator of The Free Zone, Intels was ready for The oil and gas business in terms of attracting investment and creating employment.

He further said The company had a succession plan for every expatriate, adding that no expatriate was allowed to do The job of junior employees. “In terms of employment, we are indeed complying with The Local Content Law. Even before The passage of The law, we have been practicing Local Content for a long time,” Isidor said.
