افتراضي Apple Spends More On Patent

It looks like Apple is bent on patenting its proposed tech rather than creating things that actually work. This is the result of former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, implementing the “patent it all” policy beginning with the original iPhone.

Back in 2011, the iPhone maker focused More on spending for Patent applications compared to research and development. This all started when a company challenged the Cupertino firm in a Patent lawsuit.

The New York Times reports that Jobs started his Patent filing frenzy after 2006, when a rival company Creative Technology filed a Patent dispute against Apple, which resulted in a $100 million fine over the iPod. Before this, Apple wasn’t too concerned about filing patents.

After the Creative Technology fiasco, Jobs decided to prevent this from ever happening by issuing his Patent it all policy. He would hold regular ‘invention disclosure sessions’, wherein engineers described their work to lawyers. After the sessions, lawyers filed Patent applications, despite knowing some of these technologies would not make it to their products.

A former member of Apple’s legal said, “If nothing else, it prevents another company from trying to Patent the idea.” One engineer even refused to participate in the invention disclosure sessions. He felt that these basic features should not be owned by one company.

After this Patent it all policy, Apple has been granted 4,100 patents in the past ten years. The result is a barrage of Patent disputes against rival companies. This includes Google, who Jobs feels was a stolen product. He has vowed “thermo-nuclear war” against Google’s highly popular mobile operating system, Android.

Do you feel Apple should stop spending tons of money on Patent applications and instead focus More on research and development? Do you feel it has gone too far filing Patent disputes left and right? Share your thoughts through a comment below.
