Students of the University of Nigeria {UNN}, Nsukka, Enugu Campus yesterday protested inside the premises of the institution along Osadebe Street over alleged increment in their school fees.

But for the swift intervention of security operatives who arrived on the scene early the Protest would have spread to other areas in the city.

As at the time of filling this report, academic activities were paralyzed following restrictions from security operatives including soldiers.

Most of the Students who spoke to our correspondent alleged that the university authority introduced an additional N12, 000 internet Fees per student.

Apart from the additional N12, 000 internet fees, the Students also alleged that the school authority also increased other Fees in the schools, adding that they are forced to pay for Identity card always.

They wondered how they could pay for internet when over 80 per cent of them had no laptops, insisting that the fee should be optional.

Speaking to our correspondent, the Senate President of the Student Union Government of UNN, Comrade Sunday Okafor, said the Students were out to express their dissatisfaction over the compulsory internet fees.

He advised the authority of the university to make the internet fee optional on the ground that most Students were yet to acquire laptops.

The SUG boss, however, advised the Students to embrace dialogue and assured them that they were negotiating with the authorities of the institution.

Meanwhile, the University of Nigeria management said yesterday that it learnt with sadness of a purported demonstration by a group of 40 Students of the Enugu Campus protesting alleged increment in school fees.

A statement signed by Chief A. Okonta, Registrar of the institution denied any increase in tuition Fees in the institution but affirmed the introduction of a service charge for the University’s ubiquitous, 24-hour Internet service on both Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the institution”.
