Research In Motion Ltd.’s all-business BlackBerry smartphones aren’t exactly the first devices one might think of when the conversation turns to gaming.

Unless we’re talking about Brick Breaker.

Now, as the struggling Waterloo, Ont. based technology company continues to prepare its long-awaited BlackBerry 10 operating system for launch in the first quarter of next year, RIM is working hard to ensure its new platform is gamer-friendly.

At the centre of that strategy is Sean Paul Taylor, the leader of RIM’s gaming team.

Last week, at RIM’s BlackBerry Jam Americas conference in San Jose, Mr. Taylor took to the stage to show off the gaming capabilities of RIM’s forthcoming operating system, demonstrating several games developed specifically for BlackBerry 10 as well as a handful of popular iOS and Anrdoid games that will soon be making their BlackBerry debuts.

Still, it remains to be seen how game developers embrace BlackBerry 10 and what the selection of games will look like when the platform finally launches — developers can begin submitting applications to RIM’s App World later this month.

In a recent interview, Mr. Taylor discussed RIM’s approach the game development community, the improvements the company has made to the BlackBerry 10 platform to make it gamer-friendly and the potential of mobile gaming.

Below is an edited transcript of that interview.

Post Arcade: RIM has clearly identified games as an area of priority for BlackBerry 10. Maybe you could start by explaining the company’s evolving approach to gaming?

Sean Paul Taylor: It’s no surprise that games are a part of a mobile users’ life. You kill cycles in the day between a busy life and it’s enjoyable to do, so there was nothing we had to strategize on to realize that we needed games on the platform and we needed good games that are fun and they’re social and they let you enjoy the device in a full circle. When we acquired QNX, my team was heavily involved in understanding the platform. We were advanced graphics experts, audio experts — I’ve got physics experts on my team — all different ranges. We focused on making sure the platform is really battle tested and ready for people to bring their games to the platform and to monetize their games and make money. I think a mobile user in today’s life, that’s what they want. BlackBerry users are very serious about what they do, but they do like to enjoy themselves.
