The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Gombe has issued a seven-day ultimatum to military authorities in the state to apologise over an alleged maltreatment meted to three of their members and a policeman or face legal action. The state NBA Chairman, Mr Luka Haruna, told newsmen on Wednesday in Gombe that the members, Abdulssalam Muhammad, Murtala Ibrahim and Hafsat Aliyu, were maltreated on Aug. 13, 2012, while on their way to High Court 5, Gombe.

He said that the lawyers and a policeman, Cpl. Sunday Jumba, the exhibit keeper of the state police command, were accosted by a military patrol team on stop-and-search operation. “They said Cpl. Sunday Jumba was holding a rifle, AK 47 and 29 rounds of ammunition duly wrapped and numbered from the forensic laboratory of the Nigerian Police Force which were to be tendered in court.

“They were duly searched and questioned by the said military patrol team. “The three lawyers and Cpl. Sunday Jumba duly identified themselves via their identity cards and the case file while the police officer introduced himself as the exhibit keeper of the Nigerian Police State C.I.D., Gombe.

“Regardless of their explanations, the military team, in a commando fashion, swooped and surrounded them, threatening to shoot them should they dare to move. “Consequently, they arrested and bundled them into a waiting pick-up van and whisked them to 301 Artillery Brigade, Gombe, also known as Quarter Guard.

“There, the three lawyers and the police officer were subjected to all manner of insults, harassment, displayed their photographs and labelled them as suspects with a view to further interrogate them,” he said.

The chairman said the stand of the Association was not only because their members were affected, but that other citizens in the state had of late been victims of extra-judicial killings, torture and harassment by military personnel. He said the Association was aware of the security situation in the north-eastern part of the country, adding that the military should ensure professionalism and constitutionalism in handling the security challenges.

Haruna said that the NBA demands included “unreserved apology not only to our colleagues but to all Nigerian citizens resident in Gombe who were badly affected by their activities.

“The Chief of army Staff should call all the military men posted to Gombe to confine themselves within the dictates of constitutional provision and abide by rules of engagement in the discharge of their lawful duty as it affects the unarmed civilian populace. “We also call on Gombe State Government to relocate the Anti-Kalare security outfits from the densely populated and commercial areas as it is heightening tension than solving problem in the state,” he said.
