Ambassador Ebenezer Olusanmokun, the Former Nigerian ambassador to Ivory Coast, has decried the state of education in Nigeria. The Former diplomat, who was a guest speaker at the 2012 Annual graduation Speech and prize giving ceremony of the Unity group of schools in Abuja spoke on the keys to academic excellence.

In his presentation, he said we live in a globalised world characterised by free flow of capital, even as national borders are becoming increasingly blurred. This he said has necessitated the need to train our citizens to meet the needs and challenges of our evolving world.

“Our country needs a better trained workforce to move up the economic value chain and the Government has to provide more resources for education and manpower development than it is currently doing. A situation where primary and secondary schools especially, the public schools are left in a dilapidated state, with ill-trained teachers, grossly inadequate facilities, teaching and learning aids, a solid foundation in learning cannot be laid in majority of our children,” Ebenezer said.

“It is disheartening that our governments at all instead of investing in good foundation for our educational system, without which tertiary education will be meaningless, are busy setting up miserable so-called Universities all over the place.

Where are they going to source the students from? From among children who have not properly digested their primary and secondary curricular properly? Most of the products of these so called Universities will eventually join the army of unemployed and unemployable graduates roaming our streets and cities,” he lamented.
