The security Joint Task Force in Borno State Friday claimed it has Arrested 26 Suspected members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect in Maiduguri among them were those alleged to be responsible for the killing of two Indians in the town three days ago. Also yesterday, bomb blasts and sporadic gunshots were heard in part of troubled city forcing many residents to scamper into the safety of their homes.

The task force also revealed that two members of the sect were gunned down in the siege on their hideouts at Biafra Bulabin, Kasuwan Shanu and the Government Reservation Area within the Maiduguri metropolis. The JTF in a press statement by its spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said the operations on the sect hideouts were conducted on Thursday and early hours of yesterday "after intelligence was gathered by the military."

"Some of the suspects killed and Arrested were responsible for the killings of two Indians, a cleric and several other killings in Maiduguri in the past," said the JTF in the statement. Musa said items recovered during the raid include two AK 47 Rifles, three AK 47 Magazine, 200 rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammunition, a primed Improvised Explosive Device which has since been detonated by the Bomb Disposal Unit of the outfit, unspecified numbers of cutlasses, daggers and charms.

Also found at the hideouts, according to Musa, were blood stained cloth used during the killing of a cleric in Kasuwan Shanu, Maiduguri. He revealed that the items and suspects are in custody of the JTF for necessary action. Bomb blasts and sporadic gunshots were heard in part of troubled Maiduguri yesterday forcing many residents to scamper into the safety of their homes.

Residents of the troubled city who had thought that the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan would bring peace to the troubled town, which has been under the siege of Boko Haram for about two years now, were proved wrong with yesterday’s explosions in the city.

Many major roads in the town were deserted after the explosions. In another development, it was gathered that eight persons were killed between Thursday night and Friday morning in some parts of the troubled town.
Sources said unknown gunmen killed the people at their residences at Gwange, Ajilari, Bulumkutu and Gomari areas of Maiduguri.

After the incidents yesterday, heavy presence of soldiers was witnessed at the notorious Abbaganaram junction leading to the Maiduguri Railway Terminus where the Boko Haram sect used to have their headquarters before the 2009 clampdown. Vehicles were turned back from the axis by stern looking soldiers and this left residents of the area with no other choice other than looking for alternative rough roads.
