The Delta Government in Asaba on Wednesday ordered School Heads in public schools alleged to have introduced “shift duties” For Teachers to discontinue the practice immediately, a statement said.

Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, the Commissioner For Basic and Secondary Education, gave the order in Tsekelewu, Warri North Local Government Area, on Tuesday during an unscheduled visit to Tsekelewu Secondary School.

The statement, issued by the information officer of the ministry, Mr Dennis Medi, said the commissioner also warned that zonal permanent secretaries and chief inspectors of education supervising the affected schools would be sanctioned For dereliction of duty.

The commissioner said the affected schools were in riverside communities and expressed displeasure that the supervisors allowed the practice to go on without reporting to the ministry.

“The act is unacceptable and is a clear indication of indiscipline and lack of commitment to work by teachers, particularly those posted to the riverside areas,” the commissioner said.

“At Iwere College, Koko, in the same local Government area, only eight out of 44 Teachers in the school, including the principal, were present at 8.30a.m. when the commissioner arrived there.

“After interaction with those present and the students, he directed that all those absent should report to the headquarters of the ministry, in Asaba, on Tuesday,” the statement said.

It added that the commissioner decried the poor attitude of Teachers to work in spite of appeals he had made to them since he assumed Duties in 2011.

The statement said the ministry would no longer tolerate absentee Teachers and urged those not ready to abide by the rules to leave the service rather than wait to be sanctioned.
