Dr Sam Amadi, Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Wednesday donated Books written by a Nigerian to 18 Universities across the country.

Amadi donated the book, `Time to Reclaim Nigerian : Essay 2001 – 2011’’, by Chido Onumah, a Pan-African activist, through the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja.

Amadi decried the dwindling culture of writing and reading, especially among Nigerian students, and stressed the need for Nigerians to embrace the reading culture.

“ One of the ways in which people can help in strengthening the growth of the education sector is to have individuals to support the institutions through financial contributions and donation of books, ’’ he said.

He said five copies of the book should be distributed to state Universities in Abia, Anambra, Imo and Ebonyi.

Other beneficiaries are Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Evangel University, Ebonyi, Federal University in Ebonyi, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, and Gregory University, Uturu, Abia.

Others are Madonna University, Okija; Anambra, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia; Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, Paul University, Anambra, and Renaissance University, Enugu.

He said five copies of the book should also be given to Tansian University, Anambra, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, while 10 copies of the book should go to NUC.

Amadi said NERC was committed to the improvement of the education sector.

“ We are committed to encouraging Nigerian authors that is why l am donating this book authored by Chido Onumah, a Pan-Africa activist and coordinator of Abuja-based African Centre for Media & Information Literacy.

“From the research carried out by NERC, we understand that only Nigerian scholars can help this country to address the problem, ’’ he said.

The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, admitted that the country was still grappling with the problem of writing, even among professors.

He recalled that a similar gesture was made by a member of the National Assembly and urged Nigerians to emulate them by contributing to the development of the education sector.
