An account of the fire at the site of the June 3 crash of Dana Air plane in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State generated controversy at the proceedings of the Coroner's inquest into the incident on Monday. The controversy arose from the account of an officer of the Lagos State Fire Services, Mr. Gbadebo Olaogun, the first to testify since the Coroner's sitting began on June 27.

A Lagos Coroner, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, sitting in Abule-Egba, is conducting an inquest into the crash, which killed more than 160 persons. Olaogun, who affirmed on Monday that the state fire service was adequately equipped to contain the fire that resulted from the crash, said fire fighters were able to put out the conflagration within 15 minutes of arriving at the site of the incident.

However, lawyers, including Mr. Femi Falana, whose law firm along with that of Olisa Agbakoba, initiated the inquest, disagreed with Olaogun's claims. Disputing Olaogun's claims during examination, Falana decried the situation in which government had to rely on private firms for essential equipment needed during emergency operations.

Falana said, "It is a shame that government agencies will have to rely on private firms for essential equipment that will assist during emergency situation. You invited Julius Berger Construction Company to assist you. To your knowledge, by the involvement of Julius Berger, access was made easy." But Olaogun, who said the state firefighters arrived the scene of the incident at 4.10pm, claimed that Julius Berger's equipment was only at the site to provide assistance.

He said, "We did not invite Julius Berger. They were there to provide assistance and nothing more. We had no problem with access into the site." Olaogun insisted that by 4.23pm the fire was already put out and that his men were only stationed at the site to combat "pockets of fire" which were still surfacing after the major sources of the fire on the houses and on the plane were quenched.

Meanwhile, Dana Air, owner of the crashed plane, for the first time since the Coroner's sitting began, sent a representative to the proceedings. The company was represented by a counsel, Mr. J.O Oshikoya.
The Coroner, who announced the change of venue of the proceedings to Ikeja for a bigger court room, adjourned till Wednesday. He warned summoned witnesses to take the inquest seriously, reminding them of his power to order the arrest of anyone who failed to comply.
